GROWING, TOGETHER

The Citizen Farmers project is built around a mission and a group of experts intent on connecting gardening with the greater world

OUR STORY

Some cultural thinkers have made the observation that as as society in the digital age, we’ve never been more connected and more lonely at the same time. these opposing feelings seem like they would be mutually exclusive, however, we know from our experiences that they are not. Young people are reporting higher levels of loneliness and depression, sensations which the global pandemic only intensified.

Searching for purpose is one of the essential journeys of being a human. When we find a passion, it ignites out engagement, creativity and excitement to jump out of bed in the morning. Finding essence of belonging in a community is also an essential need for all people. To thrive, we all need a healthy balance of both belonging and purpose. Citizen Farmers offers both a place to build relationships and a common purpose to work together.

In learning the neutral processes of farming, young people uncover timeless life lessons and virtues that serve deep into adulthood. Whether Citizen Farmer students grow their own food after the program or not, they will emerge having gained new friendships, a deeper understanding of an appreciation for farming and a clearer sense of how to make a positive impact in their world.
