GROWING THE FUTURE
Restoring our relationship with food, land, and community.
You don’t have to be a farmer to be a Citizen Farmer.
Citizen Farmers is for people who grow things — food, soil, kids, gardens, neighborhoods, and a deeper sense of belonging. We believe tending what’s around us is how we begin to heal it.
Education, Storytelling & Movement
Farms and gardens are powerful classrooms. They teach science, nutrition, entrepreneurship, ecology, responsibility, and care — while helping people learn where food comes from.
Learning by Farming
Citizen Farmers shares conversations, field notes, and lessons from people restoring their relationship with food, land, and community.
Stories from the Field
Rooted in the Citizen Farmers book, we are developing simple practices and resources that help people start where they are — at home, school, work, or in their neighborhood.
Tools for Stewardship
Citizen Farmers helps inspire people to take action together: growing gardens, supporting farmers, sharing food, gathering neighbors, and caring for the places they live.
Community Activation
Where the Idea Has Grown
Over the years, Citizen Farmers has taken many forms.
It began as a book.
It became a podcast.
It inspired youth farming programs.
It helped shape school farms.
It continues to inform Farmer D’s broader work with farms, communities, and regenerative places.
Each chapter taught us something important: programs, farms, and schools matter — but the deeper work is cultivating people who care for the places they live.
People Growing the Movement
Citizen Farmers grows through the people who carry these ideas into farms, schools, neighborhoods, kitchens, classrooms, and communities.
“What really sets Citizen Farmers apart is their holistic, community-centered approach. They understand that true change happens when we nurture the health of both the land and the people.”

Field Conversations for a Regenerative Future
The AGtivist is the storytelling voice of Citizen Farmers — a place for conversations with farmers, educators, builders, land stewards, entrepreneurs, civic leaders, and community builders shaping a more regenerative future.
Through these field conversations, we explore food, land, stewardship, community, and the people helping grow a healthier world.

Inspiring The Next Generation And A Regenerative Society With Laura Turner Seydel
In this episode, Farmer D and Laura Turner Seydel take a holistic look at what a regenerative society would look like. They reflect on educating and inspiring the next generation of advocates, regenerating landscapes, and moving towards a brighter future through equity and kindness.
From a Book to a Way of Living
Citizen Farmers began with a simple question: what if growing food could also help us grow healthier lives and stronger communities?
In 2014, Daron “Farmer D” Joffe published Citizen Farmers: The Farmer D Way to Grow Healthy Food, Happy Lives, and Thriving Communities. The book was never just a gardening manual. It was a “why-to” guide for living with more agency, care, stewardship, and connection.
Rooted in nine lessons from the garden, Citizen Farmers invites people to start where they are: compost something, plant something, cook something, share something, teach something, heal something.
One small action can ripple outward into healthier families, neighborhoods, schools, communities, and ecosystems.
